Wandering Roots
A Learning Adventure
Wandering Roots brings families together for regular, in-person meetups to explore the richness of our local community through field trips, hands-on learning, and connection. Each week, a group of 10–12 families gathers to visit learn from local artists, scientists, elders, and others who share a skill, story, or practice that invites curiosity and discovery.
These gatherings are designed for both children and their caregivers to participate together.
We meet outdoors or at community spaces, and each session is led by a guest or guided by a theme. Parents purchase a flexible punch card, making it easy to join when it works for your schedule. There’s no long-term commitment, just a shared invitation to show up, connect, and grow together.
Below is a list of the different meetups that Wandering Roots groups will participate in. Each meetup is divided by age groups, 5 to 8 and 9 to 12, so families with multiple ages can choose which group works best for their family.

DThis rich, hands-on experience is made possible through collaboration with local artists who share their creative process and co-lead alongside me. Together, we’ll get to know each artist, explore what draws them to their chosen medium, and discover the unique materials and approaches they use. For the older group, we’ll take a deeper look at the creative process through conversations about the creative cycle and what has supported the artist’s mindset and growth. For younger participants, the focus will be on playful, hands-on discovery—exploring a variety of mediums in a fun and engaging way. A small additional fee may be requested to help cover the cost of visiting artists and their materials.escription text goes here

This dynamic experience invites guest scientists to join us in exploring real-world questions through hands-on STEM learning. Through demonstrations, field-based investigations, and personal stories, children will experience science beyond the pages of a book—seeing how it lives in the world around them. Guest scientists come from a variety of organizations, as well as retired individuals who bring a strong knowledge base and a passion for sharing their expertise. Together, we’ll explore concepts in science, technology, engineering, and math in ways that are tangible, engaging, and connected to everyday life.

We visit a local business to learn how things are made, grown, or shared in our community. These tours offer a behind-the-scenes look and spark curiosity about the work people do and the systems that support our daily lives.

This experience offers a hands-on city tour where families explore the fundamentals of how Anchorage functions—from its infrastructure and public services to its history and community resources.

Item I’m excited to create meaningful ways for people of all ages to give back to the greater Anchorage community. Growing into adulthood involves learning how to contribute thoughtfully, and adults need to practice this too. The Wandering Roots community as a whole may come together to decide how we want to support our community, ideas might arise naturally through conversations with local artists, scientists, and other community members. Noticing a need and taking action is a valuable life skill I hope to pass down to the younger generation.description
