I hire between two to three teen assistants each year to join me at camp. Together with campers, we create a little community of joy. Learning and embodying basic wilderness awareness skills and remember our nature connection through fun and challenging games, activities and free play. End of day circles for storytelling, reflection, and thanksgiving creates an atmosphere of connection.

Camp Routine

Meet and Greet/Walk into the woods
Wanderings
Lunch
Nature Games/Exploration Activities
Afternoon Reflection Circle
Walk out of Woods/Parent Pickup

Wanderings
Wanderings provoke an abundance of questions, an invitation to learn and the excitement of play. It allows young minds the opportunity to embrace curiosity, and feel a sense of belonging within the landscape and within a group.

Nature Games
We play games that expand our connection to nature and ourselves.  Games are used to introduce core routines and to build independence, sensory awareness, and group collaboration. They also help teach about the animals, plants, and the landscapes around us.

Exploration Activity
A provocation will be offered to campers that expand on a thought, project, idea, or interest. Provocations are open-ended and optional and provide an invitation for a child to explore and/or express themselves through their senses. Provocations are used to inspire creativity and/or discovery.

Afternoon Reflection Circle
We take this time to reflect on our time together. It is an opportunity to build community by talking about shared and personal experiences. Tucking these experiences into our memories. If you see us in circle, please feel free to join.

Camp Facilitators

Amy Rupp
Amy was a teacher in the Anchorage Public School District for nine year and enjoyed teaching and working with children but longed to provide opportunities for children to experience a deeper connection to nature, themselves, and others. In 2015, she started Nature Song to support this mission and to find others families that wanted to build a community with nature as their anchor. It started out as a nature-based cooperative for toddlers and soon expanded into a drop-off preschool, summer camps and now a variety of opportunities to connect to art, nature, storytelling, and play. This is Amy’s seventh year leading children into the woods to play to their hearts content.
