Unraveling the Script

What brings us meaning? This is the question I have the opportunity to explore each week in my Authentic Action Circle with a group of four other women. Reflecting on the privilege of exploring this question, I can’t help but contrast my own opportunities with those faced by the women who came before me.

Two generations ago, my grandmother, a dairy farmer’s wife with eight children, had a physical workload that, I was told, consumed her waking hours. I doubt she had the time to consider what brought her personal joy. The question probably seemed selfish, far-fetched, or even un-Christian to think about back then.

While my grandmother’s life was shaped by endless work and strict societal expectations, I can’t help but think about the women in history and some in my own family who managed to push against limits and carve out new paths. One of those women was my great-great-grandmother, Rebecca Spring, a Quaker raised in a family that encouraged their daughters to use her voices to speak publicly about important issues of the time. Her focus was slavey and women’s rights.

My grandmothers’ stories remind me that, even as I push boundaries and challenge expectations, the tension between progress and tradition remains ever present, with no clear roadmap to follow. Perhaps that’s what makes life feel both exhilarating and, at times, overwhelming and even intimidating. It’s also why I’ve come to realize that this kind of work is not meant to be done alone it needs the strength and support of a community.

In my weekly circle, we've created just that, a community focused on sharing the joys, challenges, and personal yet collective journey toward growth and self-discovery. With the support of this group, I’m waking up to myself and the choices I make. I’m moving out of the autopilot mode of early motherhood and into routines that prioritize my well-being. These foundational goals have created space for my Nature Song ideas to unfold.
